I began my career in editorial art direction and production and have never really left it. As an art director the publication style has driven my overall design outlook and approach. Here are some of my favorites over the past twenty years of my thirty years in magazine publishing.

Ads and Brochures

Much of what I produced in my work as art and creative director involved the creation of ads and collateral brochures. I was raised in advertising (my father was a legendary copywriter), and I believe my sense of it is ingrained in my DNA. This also shows in my design approach, which is traditional and clean.

Learning modules have a natural affinity for interaction. The real problem for the designer is to be be aware of the capacity of the student who will be using it. The K-12 generation is making use of some complex modules which are designed for ease. College kids for the great part, dismiss them over book-study. There is an opportunity for modules in the workforce, and this is for whom we design our modules.

I was a relatively early adopter/ evangelist of publication and marketing site design. I developed my first sites in 1995 for AV Video Magazine, and some of the tenants if its design have held into the app designs of today.

Back then and into the current day I try to gear my sites toward what is client-useful for the long haul, rather than what is "cool" for the short. Though I don't consider myself an "Ace Coder", I try to maintain a classical, clean approach using dreamweaver (CS5). Well, maybe it's a little cool, after all.

Growing from what I perceived as a purpose for the internet as a publication vehicle, combined with my inner passion for the business of publishing, it was an easy jump into the world of e-publishing. Today, though we are caught up in confufusion as to its true application as a method to break the tradition of the merely printed word, just to be competitive. E-pubs, and what they can be are a soul in search of a body. With mine, I try to keep the approach simple as the ever changing inertia of the market defines what e-publication can be.

I began editing and creating digitial spots and movies for trade shows in 1996. Since then, I've developed a proficiency with Flash, whihc I started using in 1999 with version 1, and have even taught it (along with Dreamwaever and PhotoShop) at the adjunct professor level at a local university. I've developed clips for NASA/CTC conventions, and promos for corporations, and e-learning modules. Shown here are some of those results. Others need to be shown to you individually due to copyright restrictions not allowing for general online distribution.

Producing 3-D illustrations and PhotoShop illustrations on the computer is something I started out doing more for fun. But then I realized the true possibities of the mix. I have created 3-D animations for training purposes, along with an adjunct for some of the clips (above). Now I am working to create objects for virtual worlds (such as Second Life™) for the emerging "Machinima" animation applications.

I came into my field as an art director as a graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology's fine art photography program. Thought I don't normally shoot for a living, I still do it for art's sake. My knowledge of photography has suited me to a comfort level working with photographers in the field and studio.
I still try to keep my photograhic eye tuned, though, and have included here some topical portfolios of my recent work.
